Note: There can be variation as different countries use different definitions. For example, the number of prisons can be counted as the number of discreet prison complexes. However some countries count the number of prisons by the number of prison administrations – in some countries there might be 2 or 3 discreet prison complexes falling under one administration. In other countries, remand prisons are not included
