STRATEGY, DAY 21

The last day of sharing the regional strategy.😇

NM are sharing their impressions, suggestions and comments✍️

STRATEGY, DAY 20

GO PRACTICAL❕❕❕

💡Make sure you have a digital presence! Contact the Regional Office if you need help

💡Post a minimum of 2 times a week on your social media accounts

💡Keep your volunteers motivated through regular feedback and thanks

STRATEGY, DAY 19

LET'S GET PRACTICAL!🙌

❓Does your organisation have a 5 year strategy?

❓Does your board regularly review progress towards this?

❓Do you regularly remind your volunteers and staff of our vision?

❓How about organizing a brainstorming session with your team and finding out the strengths and weaknesses of your organization, and how these can be grown or resolved?

STRATEGY, DAY 18

💡Here is a selection of some of the best NM social network pages which can serve as an inspiration:

STRATEGY, DAY 17

💡Here is a selection of some very good NM´s websites which can serve as an inspiration:

STRATEGY, DAY 16

❓Who might give to our work?

❓What might motivate people to give to prison ministry?

❓What types of activities would people like to support most?

✍️Find the full marketing plan for fundraising here.

STRATEGY, DAY 15

The landscape survey shows that half of NMs find fundraising very challenging and the other half moderately challenging.

We need to be courageous and try something different!❕

You might find this presentation helpful: 👍

STRATEGY, DAY 14

A digital presence is our shop front to the world. The first place people turn to for information is the web.🎯

How then is it possible for an organisation seeking support from the public to exist without a web presence? ❓

Currently 86% of NMs have some form of web presence. 👏🏻

STRATEGY, DAY 12

A privilege of being a member of PFI is that one is joining a select group of like-minded people who are leading prison ministries.😇

Shortly we will be doing our first membership satisfaction survey.✍️

STRATEGY, DAY 11

Children of prisoners frequently grow up very disadvantaged.😇

Research has also shown that the single greatest intervention that helps offenders stay out of prison is to keep contact with family members alive whilst they are in prison.✍️💡

Our work with children and families of prisoners is therefore a critical part of our work.🙏

STRATEGY, DAY 10

Towards supporting our NM, we have developed a complete guide to recruiting and training volunteers. ✍️

We will be offering a zoom training in the coming months.🎯

STRATEGY, DAY 9

Volunteers, our key to success!🎯

If we are going to grow, we need to more widely professionalise the recruitment and training of volunteers. 💡

STRATEGY, DAY 8

When we can concretely identify the prisons and even show them on a map, this is a significant step towards gaining credibility.🎯

Explore PRISON map here: ❕

STRATEGY, DAY 7

Our goal is to reach 80% of the world's prisons and to meaningfully serve 20% of the prisoners. In our region we are reaching 926 prisons or (26% of the regional total). 🎯

STRATEGY, DAY 6

The PARETO principle is an amazing ‘fact’ that can help us improve our resource allocations. 🎯

STRATEGY, DAY 4

We are a very large region and very different from one another. 💡

Us as members of Prison Fellowship reflect this great diversity and therefore we require much love, forgiveness, and wisdom to keep us unified and supporting one another🙏

STRATEGY, DAY 3

Prayer is key to our organisational DNA.🙏

We will continue to develop our prayer platform that links our NMs and supports our combined mission. 🕊️

Anytime you can add your prayer request and we will pray together for it: ✍️LINK

STRATEGY, DAY 2

Testimonies are a powerful motivation for people to join our ministry and  inspire us to go forward: 🕊️

3 testimonies:💡

❕“It made me think about who I have affected and how they feel. I will leave here feeling I can change.” Sycamore Tree learner from England

❕“I observed, the prisoners´ behavior has changed after the TPJ course in our prison“ The Prison Director in Albania

❕“I have learned that Jesus exists, from today I want to follow Jesus“ TPJ learner from Spain

STRATEGY, DAY 1

As a National Ministry we will focus on growing our vision for prison ministry, emphasise growth and supporting the best means for delivery.❕

Here is just a reminder what are we doing and why are we doing this:

Our Mission🎯 - To transform the lives of prisoners, their families, and victims through a global network of ministry partners.

Our Vision💡- To break the cycle of crime and restore lives, worldwide, through Jesus’s love.

STRATEGY 2021-2026

PF Region has written a strategy for the next 5 years, which will be shared with all NM during the 21 days through a common WhatsApp Group.

During these 21 days, PF Region will be sharing daily messages with inspirational and practical advices which will help PFI to grow.

The messages will be shared on the Blog as well.

A meeting with prison officials in Albania

'TPJ had a great impact on the prisoners, there were a lot of restrictions, no activities, but only TPJ was present in our prison and it was great``, ``I observed that the prisoners became more responsible, kinder, closer to their families and they have even started to pray`` the Head of the Fushe Kruje Prison, 21 July 2021

PF Region attended a graduation ceremony in ``Fushe Cruje Prison `` in Albania

The Region has met one more time the PF Albania Team in Tirana. It seems like 2020 was a tough year, there was no other organizations during the pandemic who provided for prisoners to attend courses or activities. PF Albania was the only one organization who organized TPJ program and who also provided prisoners with clothing, food and gifts for the year of 2020.

Why are prisoner children called forgotten children?

PF Czech answer the question and calls the community to be a part of this ministry.

They are called forgotten or invisible children because little is known about their problems and there is almost no support or help for them. In the Czech Republic, 30-40 thousand children currently have parents in prison.

What problems do prisoners' children suffer the most?

How does the International Prison Community help these children in Brno?

How can people help?

PF Region had met it´s potential partner affiliate in Greece.

Dedicated godly people who are already ministering in prisons are interested to become our mebmers.

We have had a great time together, meeting each other and exploring Corint, the city where Apostle Paul planted a church.

There are only 20 000 evangelical christians in Greece. There is place to grow God´s kingdom!

Prison Ministry seems to be an open door for this vision in the near future.

PF Romania is gladly supported by Sweden

``Prison Fellowship Romania cooperates with 17 prisons in Romania. Among other things, they run a rehabilitation home for former prisoners, to help them out in the community instead of returning to crime. There are 45 places in the home, but many more - between 270 and 280 people - are in line to get there. `` says Barnmissionen, a non profit organization which is a devoted partner with PF Romania for many years.

Dear friends,

PFI views justice from a restorative lens. But what does this mean? Justice is more than punishment. It heals broken people and reconciles relationships with God and with one another.

Join Jonathan Derby, PFI’s Special Advisor on Restorative Justice, for a conversation about restorative justice and how it helps break the cycle of crime and restore lives, worldwide, through Jesus’s love.

We’ll explore how restorative justice reflects principles of biblical justice. Then examine PFI’s restorative justice definition and the three big ideas—encounter, repair, and transform—that create PFI’s restorative justice framework. Finally, we’ll discuss how restorative justice fits within the context of our work with prisoners, their families, and the church.

You will have opportunities to ask questions and contribute comments during the live event.

Tobias Merckle (Seehause (PF Germany)) recently spent time in Colombia supporting the work of PF Colombia. Here is a short video of some of the amazing Restorative Justice work that is happening.

Did you know there are 18,500 prisons worldwide?

Of these, 14,500 are in Prison Fellowship member countries.

That means we could potentially access 79% of the worlds prisons

The reality is that we are in 15%

In Europe and Central Asia we are in 907 prisons which is 25% of the total

How about setting ourselves a challenge to work in 80% (2,900) prisons across the region!

Albania: Prison ministry back to normal!!!!

Shkbsh Prison Fellowship Albania has renewed it's memorandum with the Albanian Prison Authorities. Prisoners have suffered from strong covid isolation, and they were really happy to meet our chaplains after long time.

We could greet many of the prisoners in person and had small gifts for each of them, coming from donations from partners and supporters. Gifts like underwear and socks tell them that they are not forgotten and valuable, regardless why they are in prison.  Our desire is to share with them our wonder from Psalm 8:

What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?

Fred Westerink, 23 March 2021

PF Scotland will be celebrating their 40th Anniversary on 30th October 2021 at Trinity Church Perth!

This year Prison Fellowship Scotland is excited to be joining with other prison ministries from across the UK for a 24 hour day of prayer on Easter Saturday, April 3rd.  We recognise that for the men and women in prison, as well as for those running the prisons this has been a difficult year.  For those in prison, there has been an increased sense of loneliness and isolation with little access to visits, and for those with the responsibility of looking after the prisons, they have had the extra responsibility of seeking to keep people safe from the pandemic.

RJ is part of the Swiss legislation!

The Swiss government decided to accept the new article we had proposed for the penal procedure code to include restorative justice 🙂. This means, from today on, RJ is part of the Swiss legislation!

We were invited about 2.5 years ago to take part in changing the penal procedure code by the minister of justice and had sent this article as a proposal to be included. There were heated discussions in the National Council, but we keep contacting the National Councillors with information and today they have now adopted the article by 122 votes to 71 - a miracle :-).

Many blessings and warm regards,

Claudia

ENGAGING THE YOUNGER GENERATION

By Eunice Tan, Communications Specialist with Prison Fellowship Singapore

Eunice Tan of Prison Fellowship Singapore shares how to better engage and prepare the younger generation specifically for prison work.

In a world where career is often about climbing corporate ladders, finding the right person called to serve in a faith-based organization can be difficult. But when we engage the younger generation in deeper conversations, we connect with those who have ideals, and a calling beyond a corporate career.

Younger staff bring ideas and different skill sets in areas of volunteer partnerships, social media outreach, digitalization, and more. Their experience and fresh perspectives add value to the culture.

When a role offers an authentic and meaningful experience, younger staff will be more motivated to serve. Working or serving in prison work tends to resonate with those who value social responsibility and community care. They tend to be more concerned about ensuring their job is meaningful to their lives and meets a heart passion. They are drawn by the direct causation of their effort to the fruits of their labour.

National Ministries ought to review the existing platforms and deliberate on the strengths and opportunities younger staff can bring to the table. Consider which types of jobs will benefit from the additional ideas and fresh perspectives of young people so they can be drawn to their best-fit job profiles.

We should always ask ourselves if we have  a way to integrate young staff into the working culture. This way, over time, they can be exposed to our work and efforts and provide support. Are there different avenues available within our organization to recruit younger staff with ease?

I chose to work with Prison Fellowship Singapore (PF Singapore) because it is a role where I could positively impact particular communities in need of assistance. It’s also a role where I can see and feel the direct impact of my labour. Through communications, I can connect beneficiaries to avenues of much-needed assistance which allows me to become a bridge of support. Additionally, I assist with sharing updates on the community work done by PF Singapore with the general public and raise awareness of its beneficiaries’ needs.

My millennial-aged colleague previously worked as a PF Singapore volunteer for several months before joining the staff. His experience volunteering with the PF Singapore Aftercare support group provided him with insights into prison work and the extensive areas of support provided to beneficiaries. Currently, he works closely with the PF Singapore children’s program, sharing God’s love with children.

There is a phrase that goes, “I’m here for a good time, and not a long time.” However, serving those in prison is the opposite of this phrase. Because time and effort are needed before one can begin to see the fruits of their labour in this work, young staff and volunteers need to be tenacious, focused, and prepared for the long journey ahead. They should also be cooperative and be willing to learn from more experienced coworkers.

As young staff gets familiar with their role in the organisation, staff leaders may wish to consider providing opportunities for them to take on new challenges, like upskilling courses for example. This will help to build their knowledge in the organisation, its supporters, and beneficiaries. In time, as the newer staff gain additional skills and knowledge, they will be able to better assist, hence training is important.

Always be in prayer when recruiting for the right staff. Trust and believe that God will guide you to recruit the right people for the job. Young and seasoned employees alike should commit the work they do to God, for He will mould, strengthen, and grow them in His image.

PF Qazaqstan: A short overview of 2020

In 2020, we were able to visit three prisons before the COVID-19 lock down began in March. Subsequent to this, we focussed on our Pen Pal program which has ensured we have not lost communication with those prisoners we had been visiting. We have also had the joy of continuing to support children and families of prisoners.

During the past year we applied to the Minister of Interior Affairs to allow us to start a prison chaplaincy. To help make the case we presented a short documentary showing testimonies of former prisoners who spoke of how their lives have changed since coming to know God. Also by allowing a recognised multi faith chaplaincy will help minimise radicalisation amongst prisoners for which there is evidence that some former prisoners have joined terrorist groups.

Another program we are seeking to develop a halfway house to support former prisoners whilst they seek to re-establish themselves in society.

A THEOLOGY FOR PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

When our people are working in their gifting and supported well, both physically and spiritually, then God’s work will not be inhibited.

Some great insight from Peter Drucker in "Managing the Non Profit Organization"

There is an old saying that good intentions don't move mountains; bulldozers do. In non-profit management, the mission and the plan - if that's all there is - are the good intentions. Strategies are the bulldozers. They convert what you want to do into accomplishment. They are particularly important in non-profit organizations. One prays for miracles but works for results, St. Augustine said. Well, strategies lead you to work for results. They convert intentions into action and busyness into work. They also tell you what you need to have by way of resources and people to get the results.

Many blessings for the new year

As we start the year, I have been reflecting how beautifully complex our world is.

We see this through the gigantic ripple effects of decisions made to protect us from Corona.

More than ever, I realise the need for wise decisions, as knowledge alone can lead us in so many directions.

The bible says that wisdom starts with fear of the Lord: and in a region where this is in short supply, our work proclaiming the good news of Jesus in our prisons is more important than ever.

Together we can change the world!

By Andrew D. Corley, President and CEO of Prison Fellowship International

The use of our mental abilities is a good thing—it should be celebrated and encouraged. However, at the start of 2021, I also unequivocally state that we also need miracles. Miracles are where heaven and earth collide and where our thinking meets Godly intervention which produces multiplication, results, exponential change, and transformation.

Achieving our vision

COO David Van Patten shares how PFI is moving forward in our four-year strategic plan.

We take our vision to break the cycle of crime and restore lives, worldwide, through Jesus’s love very seriously. This is not just something that sounds nice and can be put on marketing material—it is our foundation for planning and helps shape our long-term strategy to actually achieve our vision.

In 2021, we will complete the tasks associated with a three-year capacity-building phase and lay the groundwork for global market expansion through both organic and inorganic growth. By that, we mean growth through stronger affiliates, dozens of new programme partnerships, and strategic alliances with other prison ministries.

Five years ago, we asked to what point do we need to get to in order to see the transformation in the lives of prisoners, within the prison system, and by extension the community through families and victims and others. Our hypothesis is that we must hit a tipping point within the prison system.

To achieve this tipping point, we need to extend our market reach to approximately 70 percent of the world’s prisoners and engage 20 percent of the global prison population (about 2 million prisoners) annually. This is when we will see the viral spread of the transformational power of the Gospel. But to reach these goals, we need to triple our ministry impact.

The good news is that several affiliates are already seeing this happen. These are National Ministries that are “saturating their markets” with a comprehensive portfolio of effective ministry programmes. Many of these affiliates are running “end to end” type programmes that engage both prisoners and families throughout the full cycle of their incarceration and reintegration.

The evidence is beginning to mount: When 20 percent of prisoners within a closed system are engaged, prison violence drops, and prison culture begins to change. As one prison official reported after The Prisoner’s Journey was launched in his prison: “Before The Prisoner’s Journey, the sounds in the prison each night were sounds of violence. But now, in the evenings, the sound in the prison is quiet and we hear pages of the Bible flipping...”

As we move forward in implementing our four-year strategic plan, we will

Develop a strong network of national ministries (150 affiliates) and strategic partners (15+) who share our vision and are willing to develop the capacity to implement a continuum of effective ministry programmes throughout their country.

Double the number of programme partnerships with national ministries to 100+, investing in their overall national impact.

Establish regional hubs and centers of excellence to intensify knowledge sharing, mentoring, and training within each region

Provide national ministries with a menu of evidence-based ministry programmes designed for prisoners and their families. These programmes will include:

Catalytic programmes designed to open the market and pave the way for follow-on programmes

Programmes developed by national ministries that represent best practices

Programmes developed by strategic ministry partners that are retooled and rebranded to work within national ministries

Weave the golden thread of restorative justice through all of our ministry programmes, increasing the restorative effects of all that we do.

Over the last few years, we have been able to trigger a global spread of restorative programmes by concentrating on key forerunner markets. The result has been a growing body of evidence that our collective efforts are transforming identities, reducing recidivism, healing families, and breaking the cycle of crime. These successes are starting to reshape justice systems and cultures around the globe.

Our hypothesis is that we are living in a time where the context is right. We have national ministry leaders and staff who can develop effective programmes and best practices and achieve our vision.

Everything we do, everything we spend money on, must drive the achievement of our mission. If we’re doing anything that does not strengthen our ability to transform lives, then it’s a waste of time and effort. Our larger vision of breaking the cycle of crime is what will continue to drive our strategy in 2021.
